The Vedas, Ayurveda, Yoga, and Tantra laid the foundations of consciousness-based medicine in India. During this period, body, mind, and spirit were treated as integrated expressions of vital energy, guided by natural wisdom, cosmic cycles, and harmony with the Earth.
With colonization and the advancement of academic medicine, healing was fragmented. The body was separated from the mind and spirit. Therapies became linear, pharmacological, and disconnected from integrative wisdom.
Ancestral knowledge was discredited, but never lost.
With the arrival of invaders and profound social changes, traditional Indian medicine faced repression and lost institutional ground. Even so, it remained alive in villages, temples, and family lineages, preserving its knowledge through oral transmission and quiet local practices.
British colonization imposed Western medical models and marginalized indigenous practices. Modern medicine became dominant. However, Ayurvedic schools survived and resisted. Spirituality remained a hidden thread among healers, therapists, and seekers of the invisible traditions.
With global holistic movements, Indian practices regained value. Yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda gained international recognition. Therapists began to recover the integral vision of the human being. The field expanded with the support of universities and new conscious therapeutic approaches.
